From the Scope Creep Prevention Kit — the exact scripts for saying "that's out of scope" without burning bridges.
Script 1 — The Gentle Redirect
Subject: Quick note on the [feature/change] you mentioned
Use when a client casually asks for "one small thing" that's actually new scope.
Hi [Name],
Thanks for bringing this up. I took a look at what it would take to [add the feature / make the change].
This is actually outside what we scoped in our original agreement. It's not huge — probably about [X hours] in additional work — but I want to make sure we're on the same page before I dive in.
If you'd like me to proceed, I'll send over a quick change order form with the updated timeline and cost. No rush — just want to be transparent.

Subject: Options for the [feature/change] you requested
The Three-Option Framework. Use when you're happy to do the work but want the client to decide how it fits.
Hi [Name],
I've reviewed what you're asking for and here are three paths we can take:
Option A — Do it as a Change Order: I add this as a separate work item. Estimated additional cost: [$X]. Timeline extension: [X days].
Option B — Swap it in: We replace [existing deliverable] with this new request. No cost change, but we lose [what gets replaced].
Option C — Save it for Phase 2: We finish the current scope first, then tackle this as a follow-up after launch.
I'm happy with whichever path works best. Option C is what I usually recommend — ship the core project, then layer on extras once we see how it performs.

Subject: Checking in on project scope
Use when multiple "small requests" are piling up. The Scope Reminder email.
Hi [Name],
I want to make sure we're tracking well toward our deadline. Over the past [week], we've added a few items that fall outside our original scope:
- [Item 1]
- [Item 2]
- [Item 3]
Individually these are small, but together they add about [X hours] of additional work. I'm happy to include them — I just want to be transparent that they'll affect both the timeline and the total.
I've put together a quick summary of what was in the original agreement vs. what's been added since. Want me to send it over so we can decide which items to prioritize?
Best,
